EDGERTON DECOY SHOW

Koshkonong Decoys

Our decoys come in a variety of styles created by numerous carvers from the area dating back to the early 1800s. The most notable thing about the Koshkonong Decoys is their brands. Most of the time brands are found on the bottom of a decoy near the weight, however, Koshkonong Area decoys are the only known specimens that are branded on the top of the decoy. Furthermore, Lake Koshkonong featured a variety of hunting clubs, some of which are still active - keeping the history alive. So some of the Koshkonong decoys feature the brand of the hunting club they were used at in addition to the brand of the carver or owner of the decoy.

The Black Hawk Club

The Hoard Hotel

Taylor's Hotel / Koshkonong Inn

Carcajou Shooting Club

The Black-Hawk Hunting Club was the first private hunting club on the lake founded in the early 1870s on the northeast shore. Thirty four founding members from all over the country were included in the constitution of the club, making it a national hunting club from the very beginning.

Resort Hotels played a large part in providing accommodations for incoming sportsmen. The Lake Koshkonong Hotel was built exactly for this purpose in 1870. Throughout the years, the hotel held several names - Lake Koshkonong Hotel, Lake View Hotel, and Koshkonong Place. Koshkonong Place decoys were the first known decoys to be branded on their backs.
The Hoard Hotel is in fact the same hotel as above. Art Hoard purchased the Koshkonong Place property in  1898, renaming it the Hoard Hotel. With the renaming, the Koshkonong Place decoy inventory was re-branded with the name HOARD on the bottom of the decoys rather than the top.
This hotel was built before 1834 on the southwest lake shore near the town of Edgerton. An 1873 lithograph of the hotel provides the earliest visual documentation of waterfowl shooting on the lake. The Hotel continued in operation as a restaurant called the Lake House Inn until 2017. No decoys have surfaced with a brand from this prominent hotel. However, the brand "Bliven" has been found on several decoys and can be attributed to the owner and steward of the Hotel, Peleg Saunders Bliven and Courtland H. Bliven, in the late 1800s.
The Carcajou Shooting Club is one of the oldest hunting clubs on Lake Koshkonong and one of the oldest hunting clubs in the country. It was incorporated in 1896 by several Janesville men. The club is located on the north side of the lake and is still active today.
